For the Portland Bank 404 Page project, I wanted to start by creating a mood board to first understand what the great city of Portland Oregon stands for. During my brainstorming and research I came up with the following attributes for the city of Portland OR: It’s in Washington, it’s weird, in the pacific northwest, has beautiful pieces of nature, and it’s known as the city of Roses. Attributes about 404 pages I found were: they’re simple, usually contain a single image or illustration, and well, it tells you that the page you’re looking for was not found.
When it came to sketching for this project I decided to incorporate the city of roses theme along with a structure of the old United States National Bank located in downtown Portland. Through this I came up with the sketches that you see below, it was also the first project I did while utilizing a drawing tablet. It was a great chance to incorporate some hand drawn aspects into my designs to make it feel more “home grown” much like roses after the city is named.
For the final design I incorporated the portland flag for the colors blue for the roses that make up the center out stroke, yellow alongside that, with green making up the color for the roses for the rest of the space. For the 404, I wanted it to be the centerpiece of the composition so I created big, blocky red letters as the background of the flag that I would adorn the roses around.
