The design challenges I did were provided to me by prompts using Sharpen, I also self imposed a 90 minute start to finish deadline to help improve my quick thinking and sketching. It's a great tool to use when wanting to keep your skills fresh, or sharpen them if you will. For this design challenge, I was given the task of designing a simplistic shipping bag for a chess set.
First I started out by making a list of what chess means to me. I came up with: Classic, Strategic, Complex, Classy, Games. From there it was time to sketch, I started with blocky letters and decided to go in a more minimalistic tech route with the angle brackets. To reference the sketches below I decided to use a pawn as that is one of the basic symbols of chess. Down to Earth, simple and entry level. Just like my time with programming and tech at the time of this project (February 2023). To maintain this theme I used the typeface Courier New, which is a monospaced slab serif font, much like a chess board's equal blocky spaces. I went with a light cyan color code: 8bfffe I wanted something calming, as chess can make me quite irate.
For the final I found a PhotoShop mockup and imported my design into the document. From there I added the signature in a repeating pattern on the top of the bag for balance and direction. Overall this was a great project that I was happy to work on.
