For my next design challenge I pulled the prompt “Design a pizza shop coffee table book in Norway” for this I interpreted it to mean creating a book cover for all the different pizza options the great country of Norway has to offer. Ideally something like this would be available or on display at tourist locations to help draw the attention of visitors. As a man of Nordic descent myself I would love to visit Norway and its neighboring countries one day.
Now when I think about pizza, Norway is not usually the country at the top of my list. Keeping in mind my 1ish hour time limit I keep for these challenges, I first started by listing some quick attributes about Norway: it’s a Nordic country, it’s cold, and it’s in Europe, simple enough jumping off point. Below are some quick sketches of the Norwegian flag, a pizza, and the outline of the country, the second batch of sketches are book cover sketches.
To create the final, I did some searching for pictures of pizza places, Norway, and pizza places in Norway. I used that along with a book mockup to create the final image of the “Slices of Norway” coffee table book. This was a fun and interesting project to mash up the symbolism and imagery of something I don’t know much about (the country of Norway) with something I am very familiar with (pizza). These design challenges have a breadth of great content that really keeps me evolving and thinking about different things as I work.
